LEO DIALLO

At 26, private investigator Leo Diallo has already learned that Ashbury rarely tells the whole truth. Observant, cool under pressure, and stubborn enough to keep pulling at a thread everyone else wants left alone, Leo notices the small things—because the small things are usually where the trouble starts.

“Curiosity has always been one of my more expensive habits.”

VIVIAN ST. JAMES

Elegant, wealthy, and carefully composed, Vivian Saint James belongs to the side of Ashbury where appearances matter. But there is far more behind her measured confidence than society photographs suggest. When Vivian walks into Leo Diallo’s office, she brings with her the kind of problem money alone cannot solve.

“Being watched and being seen are two very different things, Mr. Diallo.”

SIMONE HAYES

By night, Simone Hayes commands the stage at the Blue Magnolia. By day, she helps keep Leo Diallo—and his investigations—on track. Sharp, independent, and impossible to impress with easy answers, Simone has an instinct for people that makes her every bit as dangerous to a lie as Leo is.

“You keep asking who. I want to know why.”

ELIJAH "POPS" JENKINS

Former jazz saxophonist Elijah “Pops” Jenkins now holds court behind the counter at Jenkins’ Diner. He has watched Ashbury change, prosper, stumble, and reinvent itself for decades. Warm, wise, and rarely fooled, Pops knows that a city’s real history lives in the stories people don’t put on paper.

“Finding a thing and understanding what you found are two different matters.”

THEDORE "TEDDY" BROOKS

“Teddy” Brooks is a respected Ashbury attorney with deep roots in the city and even deeper ties to Leo’s family. Intelligent, measured, and protective by nature, Teddy is the kind of man who chooses every word carefully. In Ashbury, that usually means there’s more behind the answer than he’s saying.

“The truth doesn’t get easier just because you waited to hear it.”

MARCUS VANCE

Marcus Vance owns Vance Auto & Body and has known Leo since they were boys. Practical, loyal, and blessed with the kind of mechanical eye that can turn a dent, scratch, or engine noise into evidence, Marcus keeps Leo grounded—even when Leo has absolutely no intention of staying there.

“Cars don’t lie, Leo. People do. Metal just tells you what happened.”

DET. ISAIAH MILLER

Homicide detective Isaiah Miller has spent enough years on the job to distrust easy explanations. Cynical about the system but serious about the truth, Miller is methodical, experienced, and perpetually irritated by Leo’s willingness to go where a badge sometimes can’t. Their methods clash. Their instincts often don’t.

“You can believe whatever you want. I need something I can prove.”
